Breast cancer is the No. 1 killer of women in the United Arab Emirates, but many succumb because the stigma surrounding the disease prevents them from seeking early detection. I sincerely hope she was an inspiration to the women there - in many more ways than one.

Many Sunni regimes in the region have felt vulnerable since last years election of the Iranian-backed Shiite government in Iraq. Saudi Arabia in particular has said that it would not allow Iran to build a puppet government in Iraq.

"There's a sense here and in the region of the need to build up defenses against Iranian encroachment," said a U.S. official familiar with the deals.

US 'plans huge Saudi arms deal'

The United States is reported to be preparing a major arms deal with Saudi Arabia worth $20bn (£9.8bn) over the next decade.

It is said to be part of a strategy for countering Iran's growing strength.

Defence officials quoted by US media and the AFP news agency said it would include missile guidance systems, upgraded fighter jets and naval ships.

To counter objections from Israel, they said, the Jewish state would be offered significantly increased military aid.

But the New York Times says Bush administration officials are concerned that the size of the package and broader concerns about Saudi Arabia's influence in Iraq could prompt critics in Congress to oppose the package.

Defence Secretary Robert Gates is said to be planning to discuss the proposals in a visit to Saudi Arabia next week with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

The officials said discussions with Congress on the arms package had just begun, and that no announcements were expected during the visit.

Other US allies in the region - Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates - could receive equipment and weaponry as part of the deal, the officials said.

The writing's on the wall, or is it just graffiti?

We all know Iranian fighters are slowly occupying northern and southern Iraq preparing for the U.S. cut and run that appears to be inevitable, and the Iraqi government is now saying that nearly half of the foreigners in Iraqi prisons are from Saudi Arabia.

It has become painfully obvious that our "friends the Saudis," have been slowly and quietly keeping the insurgency in Iraq alive, despite it's claims to be cracking down on terrorism.

Our allies in Saudi Arabia have been running a scam on us ever since September 11, 2001, claiming that they’ve cracked down on the jihad preachers who spread “deviant” ideas. What they’ve cracked down on is the reporting of those hate sermons; there used to be sources on the web where you could find translations, but all of the ones I formerly used have now dried up. (If you think that means the sermons have stopped, I have some prime swampland in Florida you might be interested in.)

Here we have an Iraqi national security adviser who says that Saudis comprise nearly half of all foreign fighters captured in Iraq, and the kingdom needs to ... crack down on jihad preachers: Many detainees in Iraq are Saudi.

Is it possible that the Iraqi government doesn't see the writing on the wall? Do they really believe that Saudi Arabia is going to stop supporting the Sunni insurgency, or stop issuing fatwas to justify the killing of innocent Iraqis?

As I see it, this should not come as a surprise to many, since the Saudi government has already warned us, under no uncertain terms, that they would arm and support all Sunni militias as soon as we leave Iraq. They can't allow Iran to take complete control of that entire region.

The civil war in Iraq will be between the Saudi-backed Sunnis and the Iranian-backed Shiites, and I suspect after a major blood-bath leaving tens, if not hundreds of thousands dead, Iran will come out the winner.

Sunni Insurgent Leader Paints Iran as 'Real Enemy'

Over the course of a 90-minute interview, a leader of an armed Sunni group in western Baghdad described his hatred for Iran and the current Iraqi government, while outlining the dimensions of an armed insurgency that extends well beyond al-Qaeda in Iraq, the organization that U.S. officials routinely identify as their central enemy.

Abu Sarhan, as the 37-year-old insurgent wished to be known, said Iraq's Sunnis are deep into an entrenched and irresolvable civil war against Iranian-backed Shiites. He said the premise of the U.S. military's counterinsurgency strategy -- deploying thousands of soldiers in small outposts in violent neighborhoods -- only inflames the insurgency and prompts attacks against the Americans.

If U.S. forces release Sunni detainees, remove the concrete blast barriers that now cordon off several neighborhoods and improve services in areas neglected by the Shiite-led government, "the attacks will be reduced 95 percent within days," he said. He added that the Americans' insistence on striking Sunni areas "is generating an increasing resistance."...

Abu Sarhan's views illustrate the deep animosity toward Shiites that fuels so much of the sectarian violence in Iraq. His comments also suggested a more restrained view of the United States, which he considers an occupier but one that should not leave immediately.

"I personally don't have a hatred of the American people, and I respect American civilization," he said. "They have participated in the progress of all the nations of the world. They invented computers. Such people should be respected. But people who are crying over someone who died 1,400 years ago" -- referring to Shiites and their veneration of a leader killed in the 7th century -- "these should be eliminated, to clear the society of them, because they are simply trash."

"The real enemy for the resistance is Iran and those working for Iran," he went on. "Because Iran has a feud which goes back thousands of years with the people of Iraq and the government of Iraq."

Abu Sarhan said that the leading Shiite parties in the government, including the Dawa party of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, along with the Supreme Council and prominent Shiite militias, are beholden to Iran. The Iranians appeared to be of such grave concern to him not just because of the bloody history of war between the two countries, but also because of Iran's perceived intolerance toward Sunnis in general. He said his long-term political goal was to recapture the prominence that Sunnis had enjoyed under Hussein's government.

"The problem is that the Americans have a relationship with the slaves: Dawa, Badr Organization, the Mahdi Army are slaves to Iran," he said.

Abu Sarhan described al-Qaeda in Iraq as an organized, predominantly Iraqi-run network with a strict hierarchy.

... The top U.S. military commander in Iraq, Gen. David H. Petraeus, recently described al-Qaeda in Iraq as "public enemy number one." And President Bush, during a speech July 4, cited the organization as the one group that attempts to "cause enough chaos and confusion so America would leave."

"We must defeat al-Qaeda in Iraq," Bush said.

But Abu Sarhan described al-Qaeda in Iraq as one of "hundreds" of insurgent groups, some aligned and others in some degree of conflict, ranging from cells of about 10 people to groups with scores or hundreds of members.

"The American president insisting on fighting al-Qaeda, or saying that al-Qaeda is the problem in Iraq, is just like someone who is insisting on taking diabetes medicine while he has a cardiac problem," he said, describing it as an "intentional" misdiagnosis. "Any person in the position of the American president, who has drawn himself a certain path, would be very embarrassed to change that track and confess that he has been wrong. Unless he loves his people more than he loves himself. Only then could he confess his wrongdoing for the sake of his people."

Abu Sarhan estimated that about half the attacks against American forces come as reprisals for U.S. raids or arrests. He cited the U.S. offensive in Diyala province, Operation Arrowhead Ripper, as the type of effort that engenders more enemies than friends. "You can imagine how many families were hurt because of this military campaign," he said.

Mickey Mouse 'Twin' Killed On Hamas TV

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip, June 29 -- A Mickey Mouse look-alike who preached Islamic domination on a Hamas-affiliated children's television program was beaten to death in the show's final episode Friday.

In the final skit, the character Farfour was killed by an actor posing as an Israeli official trying to buy Farfour's land. At one point, the mouse called the Israeli a "terrorist."

"Farfour was martyred while defending his land," said Sara, the teen presenter. He was killed "by the killers of children," she added.

"Tomorrow's Pioneers," a weekly show featuring a giant black-and-white rodent with a high-pitched voice, had attracted worldwide attention because the character urged Palestinian children to fight Israel. It was broadcast on Hamas-affiliated Al Aqsa TV.

Station officials said Friday that Farfour was slain and the show taken off the air to make room for new programs. Station manager Mohammed Bilal said he did not know what would be shown instead.

Israeli officials have denounced the program as incendiary and outrageous. The program was also opposed by the state-run Palestinian Broadcasting Corp., which is controlled by Fatah, Hamas's rival.

In the show Farfour tells the kids, "We will return the Islamic community to its former greatness and liberate Jerusalem, God willing, liberate Iraq, God willing, and liberate all the countries of the Muslims invaded by murderers!"

The Palestinian authority tried to stop the airing of this evil filth but lost out in the end.

Nato troops in Afghanistan save the life of a six year old boy by defusing a bomb strapped to his body at a military checkpoint. He was sent by the Taliban to blow himself up on a suicide mission. HE WAS 6 YEARS OLD!

Nato accuses Taliban of using children in suicide missions

Children as young as six are being used by the Taliban in increasingly desperate suicide missions, coalition forces in Afghanistan claimed yesterday.

The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), to which Britain contributes 5,000 troops in southern Afghanistan, revealed that soldiers defused an explosive vest which had been placed on a six-year-old who had been told to attack Afghan army forces in the east of the country.

The boy was spotted after appearing confused at a checkpoint. The vest was defused and no one was hurt.

The claim came only hours after the second report this week that civilians had been killed in Nato military operations...

"They placed explosives on a six-year-old boy and told him to walk up to the Afghan police or army and push the button," said Captain Michael Cormier, the company commander who intercepted the child, in a statement. "Fortunately, the boy did not understand and asked patrolling officers why he had this vest on."

Lieutenant Colonel David Accetta, ISAF eastern regional command spokesman, told the Guardian: "In the past we have not seen the Taliban sink that low, to use children as suicide bombers. The personnel secured the vest to make sure the child was safe."

Lt Col Accetta said the procedure for dealing with an armed minor had so far been untested in Afghanistan.

"It would have been difficult to know what to do considering it was a six-year-old boy and he was presumably going to push the button himself or someone was going to detonate it for him remotely," Lt Col Accetta said.

I hope they didn't send him home. His parents would probably accuse him of being an infidel, and kill him. It's obvious they view little children the same as they do donkeys.

Oil prices fell. The stock market rose. Video images of smiling British soldiers with Iranian President Ahmadinejad were everywhere. So were pictures of the 15 freed hostages embracing family members back home. The relief over the return of the Brits was so tremendous; you could almost hear birds singing.

Maybe it's because military action won't be needed or maybe it's just because the ordeal won't drag on and on, but the world is breathing easier now. A lot of folks are happy. The problem, as I see it, is that Ahmadinejad seems to be the happiest.

And why shouldn't he be? He has shown the world that his forces can kidnap British citizens, subject them to brutal psychological tactics to coerce phony confessions, finagle the release of a high-ranking Iranian terror coordinator in Iraq, utterly trash the Geneva conventions and suffer absolutely no consequences.

The UN Security Council summoned its vaunted multilateral greatness to issue a swift statement of sincere uneasiness. The EU, which has pressured Britain to rely on Europeans for mutual defense instead of the US, wouldn't even discuss economic sanctions that might disrupt their holidays. Even NATO was AWOL.

In talks with Chinese officials about the UN sanctions recently placed on Iran, Iran's nuclear chief said, with regard to obtaining nuclear capabilities for peaceful means, "if we are threatened, the situation may change."

Threaten us and we will nuke your ass! That's what I hear.

Anyone who doesn't believe Iran's mission is to build several large nukes to threaten others, including the U.S., is being naive to say the least. (Hat tip: LGF)

Iranian official: If threatened, we will use nuclear weapons

Iran's chief nuclear envoy Ali Larijani said on Friday that Iran is committed to the peaceful use of nuclear technology but warned the situation could change if his country is threatened.

"We oppose obtaining nuclear weapons and we will peacefully use nuclear technology under the framework of the Nonproliferation Treaty, but if we are threatened, the situation may change," He told a news conference after two days of talks in Beijing.

Iran's nuclear chief said his country has produced and stored 250 tons of the gas used as the feedstock for uranium enrichment, state-run television reported Friday.

Vice President Gholamreza Aghazadeh, who is also the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, said Iran has kept the uranium hexaflouride gas, or UF-6, in underground tunnels at a nuclear facility in Isfahan to protect it from any possible attack.

"Today, we have produced more than 250 tons of UF-6. Should you visit Isfahan, you will see we have constructed tunnels that are almost unique in the world," State-run television quoted Aghazadeh as saying.

Regional crisis in the making while libs talk.

On the heels of the Iranian nuke statement, Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak in a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said, if Iran attains nukes, Egypt will also have to in order to defend itself.

Is Egypt declaring its intentions to develop nuclear weapons? Thus it appeared in a speech delivered by Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak Thursday on the occasion of meeting with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in Sharm e-Sheikh.

“We don’t want nuclear weapons,” Mubarak stated, “But since they appear highly present in the area, we must defend ourselves."

An Iraqi presidential spokesman said this morning that two Iranians invited by Iraqi President Jalal Talabani have been detained by U.S. forces in Iraq.

It's been no secret that the Iranian government has been trying to expand it's role in Iraq to counter any U.S. influence in the region.

Talabani's media adviser, Hiwa Osman said "The president is unhappy about it."

U.S. Is Holding Iranians Seized in Raids in Iraq

The American military is holding at least four Iranians in Iraq, including men the Bush administration called senior military officials, who were seized in a pair of raids late last week aimed at people suspected of conducting attacks on Iraqi security forces, according to senior Iraqi and American officials in Baghdad and Washington.

The Bush administration made no public announcement of the politically delicate seizure of the Iranians, though in response to specific questions the White House confirmed Sunday that the Iranians were in custody.

Gordon D. Johndroe, the spokesman for the National Security Council, said two Iranian diplomats were among those initially detained in the raids. The two had papers showing that they were accredited to work in Iraq, and he said they were turned over to the Iraqi authorities and released. He confirmed that a group of other Iranians, including the military officials, remained in custody while an investigation continued, and he said, “We continue to work with the government of Iraq on the status of the detainees.”

It was unclear what kind of evidence American officials possessed that the Iranians were planning attacks, and the officials would not identify those being held. One official said that “a lot of material” was seized in the raid, but would not say if it included arms or documents that pointed to planning for attacks. Much of the material was still being examined, the official said.

Nonetheless, the two raids, in central Baghdad, have deeply upset Iraqi government officials, who have been making strenuous efforts to engage Iran on matters of security. At least two of the Iranians were in this country on an invitation extended by Iraq’s president, Jalal Talabani, during a visit to Tehran earlier this month. It was particularly awkward for the Iraqis that one of the raids took place in the Baghdad compound of Abdul Aziz al-Hakim, one of Iraq’s most powerful Shiite leaders, who traveled to Washington three weeks ago to meet President Bush.

Over the past four days, the Iraqis and Iranians have engaged in intense behind-the-scenes efforts to secure the release of the remaining detainees. One Iraqi government official said, “The Iranian ambassador has been running around from office to office.”

Iraqi leaders appealed to the American military, including to Gen. George W. Casey Jr., the senior American ground commander in Iraq, to release the Iranians, according to an Iraqi politician familiar with the efforts. The debate about what to do next has also engaged officials in the White House and the State Department. The national security adviser, Stephen J. Hadley, has been fully briefed, officials said, though they would not say what Mr. Bush has been told about the seizure or the identity of the detainees.

A senior Western official in Baghdad said the raids were conducted after American officials received information that the people detained had been involved in attacks on official security forces in Iraq. “We conduct operations against those who threaten Iraqi and coalition forces,” the official said. “This was based on information.”

A spokesman for Mr. Hakim, who heads a Shiite political party called Sciri, which began as an exile group in Iran that opposed Saddam Hussein, declined to comment. In Tehran, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Mohammad Ali Hosseini, had no comment about the case on Sunday other than to say it was under examination.

The action comes at a moment of extraordinary tension in the three-way relationship between the United States, Iran and Iraq. On Saturday, even as American officials were trying to determine the identity of some of the Iranians, the United Nations Security Council passed a resolution imposing mild sanctions against Iran for its refusal to suspend uranium enrichment. Meanwhile, the Bush administration has rejected pressure to open talks with Iran about its actions in Iraq.

It may be time to do more than talk to Iran...

The US navy, air force and marines have started to assemble in the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Oman and the eastern Mediterranean to start practicing the prohibition of ships carrying weapons of mass destruction and missiles. U.S. allies Bahrain, Kuwait, France, Britain, and Canada are among those planning to participate in the exercise, while expectation are that Iran will not stand by and watch.

Just days ago the Iranian supreme ruler Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with automatic weapon in hand, delivered a speech to students at the Tehran University, spouting with total belligerence, that Iran will not wait passively for an American attack on it's nuclear facilities, but will instead go for preemptive strikes against any and all U.S. forces in the Persian Gulf and U.S. interest in the middle east in general.

The powerful spectacle of Iran’s be-turbaned supreme ruler Ayatollah Ali Khamenei clutching an automatic rifle, displayed exclusively by DEBKAfile, drew on the belligerent imagery of Yasser Arafat and Saddam Hussein. The Iranian media suppressed this particular shot in its coverage of his sermon at Tehran University Oct. 13, the third Friday of Ramadan. DEBKAfile’s Tehran sources reveal that the Iran’s leaders took three fateful steps ahead of Khamenei’s performance:

1. They pointed up the tradition initiated by the father of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini of marking the last Friday of Ramadan as International al Qods Day - “Jerusalem Liberation Day.”

2. Khamenei’s aides leaked word that his decision to hold the sermon of Oct. 13 was prompted by his discovery that the USS Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group was heading for the Persian Gulf and would be deployed in operational mode opposite Iran’s shores by Oct. 21.

3. In Beirut, Iran’s surrogate Hizballah announced the cancellation of its annual military parade on al Qods day, i.e. Oct. 20.

Military circles in the United States and Israel interpret these steps as meaning that Iran will be standing by in battle positions the day before the Eisenhower reaches its destination. DEBKAfile and DEBKA-Net-Weekly’s military sources have been reporting since late August that Iran’s political and military leaders have resolved not to wait passively for an American attack but to go instead for a pre-emptive strike against US forces in the Persian Gulf and Iraq, as well as targeting Israel.

On October 7, DEBKAfile reported: Tehran and Damascus are gearing up for a pre-emptive attack on Israel to ward off a US strike on Iran’s nuclear sites – whether from Lebanon, or Golan, using Hamas to launch an offensive from Gaza, or a combination thereof. The Bush administration would then have to divide its attention and military might among three warfronts simultaneously.

DEBKAfile and DEBKA-Net-Weekly have exhaustively covered the Iranian Blow of Zolfaqar military exercise ongoing in the Persian Gulf from August and its military’s high war preparedness, as well the US naval, air and marine concentrations due to complete their deployment opposite Iran’s shores by the end of this month.

Khamenei devoted much of his sermon to the Lebanon war waged between Israel and Hizballah in July and August. “The war isn’t finished,” he said. “And the losers will certainly not remain idle. These evil forces are already hard at work to remedy their defeat and Islamic nations need to remain vigilant and ready to react with determination against any other potential attack.”

The supreme ruler continued: "One of the projects of the Americans, Zionists and their allies is to come to Lebanon under the United Nations, officially to defend the Lebanese from the attacks of foreign forces and then change the cards on the table and fight our Hezbollah brothers."

By smearing as fraudulent UN Resolution 1701 which expanded UNIFIL and enforced a ceasefire in Lebanon, Khamenei made a pointed attempt to discredit the world body ahead of the Security Council sanctions session called for this week to punish Iran for continuing to enrich uranium in defiance of UN resolutions.

He was also warning “the foreign forces” (UNIFlL) that “the war was not finished.” A central them of his sermon was therefore “resistance” as “the key to victory.”

The Supreme leader said the Hezbollah (armed by Iran and Syria) had achieved "a unique historic victory” for Islam over “arrogance and colonialism” (Americans and Israelis). "The Lebanon war changed the political equations in the region.”

Settling accounts with the British and the Americans, Khamenei commented, "The British are experts in pursuing that policy (of divide and rule) and they have taught the Americans how to sow the seeds of discord among Shias and Sunnis in Iraq.

Referring to the situation in Iraq, he said, "The crisis in Iraq preceded the one in Lebanon, and its intensity has aggravated today, because Iraq, Lebanon, and other events in the region are all rings of a broken American chain."

The Iranian ruler laid great stress on "International Qods Day” as the day of “resistance” for the entire Islamic Umma against “the oppression and injustice observed by the Zionists and their supporters."

DEBKAfile’s Iran and Islamic sources note that the Kalashnikov in the supreme ruler’s hand spoke louder than his bellicose rhetoric.

Also in the mix, Israeli intelligents are claiming the militant group Hamas has started taking delivery of Iranian made anti-aircraft missiles via Egypt.

Will the rest of the Arab world stand by and allow Iran to start something that will obvious effect the entire region adversely for many years to come? I think yes.

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan helps Iran deliver weapons and re-supplies to Hezbollah via Beirut airport.

By insisting that the UN will monitor all deliveries into the Beirut airport, Israel agreed to end the air embargo on Lebanon to allow shipments of needed goods to enter the country.

As soon as the embargo was lifted the Lebanese prime minister, Siniora barred all UN personnel from the airport.

Iran resumed weapons airlift to Hizballah via Beirut Friday as soon as Israel ended its air blockade.

Iran’s first post-blockade arms flight departed Dubai Friday, Sept. 8, to test the ground at Beirut international airport for Israeli air force or UN reactions. DEBKAfile’s military sources report that the forbidden goods were unloaded and sailed through the airport unhindered. Tehran therefore determined to send two further bulk consignments in the next 48 hours aboard commercial flights from the Persian Gulf.

Our sources report the arms crates listed were on the documents as “computer equipment. Handle with care.” They were off loaded onto trucks which drove in convoy to Hizballah headquarters in Baalbek.

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, determined to end Israel’s air blockade on Lebanon, promised solemnly that UN monitors would control incoming passengers and goods at Beirut airport. But he failed to make the Siniora government follow through on this pledge. The Lebanese prime minister immediately barred the airport to UN inspections. The five German air monitors agreed on were only allowed to establish a checkpoint for controlling arms smuggling at a distance of one kilometer from the international airport. DEBKAfile reports they are standing idle because the trucks carrying forbidden cargoes are able leave the airfield and bypass their checkpoint by alternative routes.

At the same time, DEBKAfile’s diplomatic sources report the Israeli government and the UN are colluding to present the expanded UNIFIL project as a big success and a satisfactory formula for enabling Israeli troops to quit Lebanon and fully implementing UN resolution 1701.

In actual fact, the UN deployment by land and sea does nothing to curtail Hizballah’s recovery and rearming. Its only achievement thus far is the acceleration of Israel’s disengagement from the Lebanon scene empty-handed.

Our military sources disclose that Iran is sending Hizballah fresh supplies of anti-tank weapons and for the first time a large quantity of anti-air missiles. The war materiel is coming in by land, sea and air.

The promised Italian, French and Greek rival presence, on the strength of which Israel lifted its air blockade, has been pushed by the Lebanese government out to sea and restricted to a 12-km radius from the coast. The European warships can keep an eye on big freighters approaching Lebanese ports, but cannot keep track of the small vessels reaching Lebanon ports from the northern Syrian ports of Tartus and Latakia. That is where Iranian cargo vessels have been unloading large quantities of arms for Hizballah outside the European fleets’ limits in the last two weeks. Furthermore, Friday, as soon as Israel was persuaded to lift its sea blockade, three Lebanese and Syrian ships crammed with arms for Hizballah departed the northern Lebanese port of Tripoli and after a short voyage hugging the Lebanese coast put into the southern Lebanese port of Sidon, where willing Hizballah hands unloaded their cargo.

On land, the Lebanese-Syrian border is wide open. Three or four arms truck convoys cross into Lebanon every day.

How much longer are we going to take this man serious?

Israel should now finish what it started and be done with it once and for all.

The fact that Hezbollah lost all their primo, top of the line Iranian built, Zelzal-2 missiles in the first half hour of the war with Israel, has really gotten their panties in a wad.

They had no idea that Israel knew exactly where they were, and they were devastated when Israel wiped them out first thing.

They are now out looking for and arresting people they suspect of collaborating with Israel against the guerilla group.

First wave of arrests inside Hizballah of suspected informers to Israeli intelligence

No commissions of inquiry for Hassan Nasrallah. Our exclusive sources learn that Hizballah’ special security service has begun rounding up suspects in the northern Beqaa Valley, Baalbek and South Lebanon of members and others suspected of tipping off Israel intelligence on the location of the storehouse holding the heavy Zelzal missiles.

Those missiles, no more than three or four, were held in reserve as Hizballah’s most devastating strategic weapon against Israel, capable of hitting Tel Aviv.

Monday, Aug. 28, prime minister Ehud Olmert revealed for the first time that the Israeli air force destroyed those missiles in the first 34 minutes of the Lebanon war on July 12. Nasrallah needs urgently to find the leak through which the missiles’ place of storage and very existence, one of Hizballah’s most tightly kept secrets known only to very few top leaders of the organization, reached Israel.

The first arrests were made among people living in the vicinity of the missile cache.

More arrests have been carried out in the Shiite communities who live near or are connected with the Hizballah intelligence and secret command centers in Baalbek, which were targeted by Israeli air strikes and commando forays.

DEBKAfile’s intelligence sources reveal that Hizballah’s special security apparatus is focusing on two lines of inquiry:

1. Israel’s Aug. 1 commando raid on the Deir al Hikhma hospital in Baalbek.

2. The series of Israeli incursions in the course of the war in the hills northwest of Baalbek, where Hizballah’s main command center, including its intelligence headquarters, are hidden underground in well fortified quarters – and are still in place.

Some have claimed that Hezbollah did not fire these missiles into Israel during the war because of Tehran's opposition, but I think the real truth may lie right here.

If they had them, they would have used them. No doubt in my mind.

Hezbollah leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah mis-calculated the Israeli response to the kidnapping of two Israeli soldiers by Hezbollah which started a war beyond his belief.

He said in a TV interview on Sunday that if he had known it would lead to a war, he would never have ordered the capture of the two Israeli soldiers.

"We did not think, even 1 percent, that the capture would lead to a war at this time and of this magnitude. You ask me, if I had known on July 11 ... that the operation would lead to such a war, would I do it? I say no, absolutely not," he said.

Nasrallah, who went into hiding on the first day of the war, also said he did not believe a second bout of fighting would break out with Israel, even though he said more than half his group's rocket arsenal was left intact.

"The current Israeli situation, and the available information tells us that we are not heading to another round," he said.

Although Nasrallah claimed victory over Israel as the cease fire took hold, he did apologized in the interview for the suffering of the Lebanese people, caused by the war.

Two Fox News journalists, Steve Centanni and cameraman Olaf Wiig of New Zealand were released Sunday, almost two weeks after being seized by militants, ending the longest-running drama involving foreign hostages in the Gaza Strip.

They were dropped off at Gaza City's Beach Hotel, several hours after appearing in a video released by their captors.

With only days left before the August 31 U.N. deadline which demands Iran stop it's uranium enrichment or face economic and political sanctions, Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad inaugurated a new heavy-water production plant in Khondab Iran.

Ahmadinejad said, after the inauguration of the plant, that Iran's controversial nuclear program poses no threat to any other country, not even the Zionist "which is a definite enemy."

Tehran called the U.N. Security Council resolution "illegal" and said it won't stop it's enrichment program.

Iran Opens Plant That Can Produce Plutonium

Just days before it is supposed to suspend enrichment of uranium or face the prospect of sanctions, Iran continues to project an image of defiance and confidence. Its position regarding the demand it suspend enrichment remains a determined "No."

On Saturday, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, made a provocative, if symbolic, gesture by formally inaugurating a heavy-water plant. The plant, which Iranians say is intended for peaceful purposes, would also produce plutonium, which in turn could be used in the building of nuclear warheads.

"There are no talks of nuclear weapons in Iran," President Ahmadinejad said as he announced the opening of the plant. "And we are not a threat for any country, even the Zionist regime that is the enemy of the countries in the region."

But, he added: "We tell the Western countries not to cause trouble for themselves because Iranian people are determined to take big steps."

The action was the latest in a series of not-too-veiled threats against the West if Iran is saddled with sanctions.

But Iran's public posture has all but guaranteed that the members of the United Nation's Security Council will have to at least address Iran's violations of the resolution setting August 31 as the deadline for suspending enrichment.

Iranian's public confidence is based on three primary factors, political analysts here said: There is a strong belief that two of the council's permanent members, Russia and China, will support Iran's call for talks and oppose moving toward sanctions; that the United States is far too bogged down in Iraq and Afghanistan to be willing to spark another conflict in the region; and the perceived victory of Hezbollah in its war with Israel has strengthened Iran's political capital in the region.

"After the defeat of Israel by Hezbollah forces, China and Russia should not want to leave the side that won the war, which is the Islamic world," said Hossein Shariatmadari, who is the editor of the conservative daily newspaper Kayhan.

Iran and Syria were caught trying to get missiles and weapons to Lebanon via Syria for use by Hezbollah militants. US spy satellites spotted the weapons being loaded and the Turkish authorities forced the planes down on a Turkish military airport where they were detained.

Turkey forces one Syrian, 5 Iranian arms planes to land at Diyarbakir military base.

Six Iranian ILDT type 4-cargo planes and a Syrian aircraft were forced to land at the southeast Turkish military airport last Thursday after US spy satellites spotted they were loaded with missiles, missile launchers and eight boxes of Chinese made C-802 missiles, dubbed by Iran “Nur.”

DEBKAfile’s military sources disclose: The flights were bound for Damascus and Syrian military air bases just across the Turkish border. The C-802 is the advanced ground-ship missile which crippled the Israeli Navy’s gunship off Beirut, and killed three of its crew on July 14, two days after the outbreak of the Lebanon war.

Searches by the Turkish authorities disclosed that one of the planes was carrying crates of Fajer rockets which Hizballah fired at Israeli towns. Two of the Iranian cargo planes have not been permitted to take off from Turkey unless they fly back to Iran.

Four flights, carrying light ammunition including anti-tank weapons, were allowed to complete their journey to Syria after their pilots presented documents proving they were purchased in Iran for the Syrian army.

DEBKAfile adds: This is the first time American military satellites have been openly revealed to have aided in the UN embargo against arms transfers from Syria and Iran to the Hizballah.

DEBKAfile’s military sources also disclose that the Iranian and Syrian cargo flights were bound for three Syrian military airfields, two of which were transferred at the end of July to the control and supervision of the air wing of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards. The flight carrying the C-802 missile was destined for the military section of Damascus’ Mezze international airport.

The launchers and Fajer rockets would have been unloaded at Syria’s Nasiriya air base, 40 km from the Lebanese border. The anti-tank rockets and ammunition were bound for al Qusayr, north of Damascus and only 25 km from Lebanon’s northern Beqaa Valley.

They sure didn't waste any time trying to get more weapons to Lebanon. So much for this so called cease fire.

Israel better be on high alert.

Who really won the Israeli-Hezbollah conflict?

It is a temptation among most international pundits, in the midst of a cease-fire in the Israeli-Hezbollah conflict, to proclaim the Israeli government, specifically their Prime Minister Ehud Olmert the loser and Hezbollah the winner.

There may be some truth to this premise. I mean, it is a fact that Israel did not do a very good job waging this war right from the start. They never really committed themselves to winning at all cost. With an air campaign which appeared restrained at best and not having enough boots on the ground to take the war right to the militants, they were not able to prosecute this war against Hezbollah effectively enough to disarm it.

So now what? They end up with this extremely weak, poorly supported, UN sponsored truce, which only a moron would believe will actually result in anything positive, like Hezbollah being disarmed, putting a halt to the resupplying of weapons by Iran and Syria, or Lebanon getting it's country back from the terrorist grip of Hezbollah.

Not to mention Israel's main objective was never accomplished. The return of the two Israeli soldiers kidnapped by Hezbollah that started the whole thing.

But is Hezbollah a winner?

I don't think so, once reality sets in.

Casualties among the Lebanese people were very high, and were mostly civilian, due to the cowardly manner in which Hezbollah used the Lebanese people as human shields while firing off their missiles and rockets into Israel. The infrastructure of the entire country of Lebanon has been destroyed by the IDF and will cost billions of dollars to reconstruct.

And yes, Hezbollah is out front showing the world that they are the true keepers of Lebanon by giving citizens money to rebuild their lives. I don't know how much life building you can do with $12,000, but it's better than nothing and the Lebanese people are happy with it none-the-less. But how long is this going to last before the money runs out and Lebanon, with it's people, are left with a country in ruins for years to come.

How about Syria?

Well it looks like Syria is no more than a puppet of Iran, being used as a gateway to Lebanon so Iran can get it's weapons into the hands of Hezbollah where they need them. And, well, Syria has it's own problems politically speaking. It seems that President Bashar Assad lashed out at the moderate Arab countries because of their lack of support for Hezbollah in the beginning of the conflict, calling them in essence, "half men." This, needless to say, did not go over very well in the Arab world.

So the way I see it, the winner is Iran.

It used Hezbollah as it's proxy to start a war with it's arch-enemy Israel at a time when the pressure was on them by the UN and the world over it's nuclear activity and while Israel was bogged down in Gaza with Hamas and the Palestinians.

Iran also wins in the arena of public opinion, because of the damage done to America's image in the Muslim world, as they were seen as supporting and directing the "deliberate destruction of Lebanon" using Israel as their proxy. Obviously an inaccurate image, but a real opinion held by many Muslims around the world anyway.

The conflict also effected the oil markets, driving prices to all time highs, while filling the pockets of the Iranian government at the same time. You got to love it, if you're the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad or the Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

And while all this is happening the Middle East peace process between Israel and the Palestinians is put on the back burner, at best, or maybe deemed completely unobtainable now. The latter has been a goal of the Iranian mullahs for a long time. It appears they won this one also.

So, as I see it, it's was a win-win situation for Iran, and a lose-lose situation for America and Israel.

And we still have Aug. 22nd to look forward to.

Let's just hope it's not radioactive...

Well it certainly appears that Iran's return on it's investment in Hezbollah, was not quite what they expected.

After two decades and billions of dollars spent in Lebanon, on a massive cache of weapons, training of personnel and the construction of a high tech military infrastructure designed to be a formidable deterrent to the Israeli military, Tehran could do nothing but sit back and watch the rout.
