The worldwide furor unleashed by the cartoons of the Prophet Muhammed that I published last September in Jyllands-Posten, the Danish newspaper where I work, was both a surprise and a tragedy, especially for those directly affected by it. Lives were lost, buildings were torched and people were driven into hiding.

And yet the unbalanced reactions to the not-so-provocative caricatures -- loud denunciations and even death threats toward us, but very little outrage toward the people who attacked two Danish Embassies -- unmasked unpleasant realities about Europe's failed experiment with multiculturalism. It's time for the Old Continent to face facts and make some profound changes in its outlook on immigration, integration and the coming Muslim demographic surge. In an apparent policy shift by the U.S. government, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice today offered direct talks with Iran on the condition it stop its uranium enrichment activities.

At a news conference, Rice said, "Iran must show it wants to negotiate 'in good faith' or face the consequences."

"It's time to know whether Iran is serious about negotiation or not."

Iran's official news agency said the offer was clearly a propaganda ploy by America, and that Iran has repeatedly said that the suspension of uranium enrichment is not on Iran's agenda and would not be considered as a precondition for talks about it's nuclear program.

"It's evident that the Islamic Republic of Iran only accepts proposals and conditions that meet the interests of the nation and the country. Halting enrichment definitely doesn't meet such interests," IRNA said at the end of a dispatch reporting the offer of talks by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

"Given the insistence by Iranian authorities on continuing uranium enrichment, Rice's comments can be considered a propaganda move," IRNA said.

Earlier, an Iranian lawmaker was quoted as saying any direct talks with the United States over Tehran's nuclear program must be held without preconditions.

The administration obviously knows this will not work, but they have to put it on the table so they can say "we tried."

With Saddam Hussein out of the picture in Iraq, Iranian Intelligence is becoming more involved both politically and economically in Iraq's internal affairs, in order to influence the current political situation.

To Iran's west lies a natural ally and perhaps its most potent weapon in the international fray over its nuclear program. While Iran and Iraq were arch enemies during the rule of Saddam Hussein, all signs point to an increasingly robust relationship now that Shiites have achieved a dominant role in the Iraqi leadership.

It's a bond that has yet to reach its potential — in large part because the U.S.-led invasion is responsible for Iraqi Shiites being at the top of the political heap for the first time in modern history. Iraqi Shiites are not looking the gift horse in the mouth.

But Iran and Iraq share a Shiite Muslim majority and deep cultural and historic ties, and Tehran's influence over its neighbor is growing. Iran will likely try to use Iraq as a battleground if the United States punishes Tehran economically or militarily, analysts say.

Many key positions in the Iraqi government now are occupied by men who took refuge in Iran to avoid oppression by the Saddam's former Sunni Muslim-dominated Baathist regime.

Now, did the U.S. see this coming? Are the Iraqi people going to turn on us in favor of their new found friends, the Iranians? Only time will tell as the Nuclear clock continues to tick away.

Iranian Intelligence 'Present in Iraq'

A high-ranking Iranian official has stressed that his country's influence is present in Iraq's current political situation in Iraq and that Iranian Intelligence have had a presence in Iraq since the era of deposed Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. The official, who was speaking during a lunch banquet with a group of journalists, said that Iran has friends in Iraq, including President Jalal Talabani, Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, and the parliament speaker; and has good relations with some political parties, including the Sunni forces. The Iranian official noted that Tehran decided to cancel the dialogue with Washington on the Iraqi affairs for many reasons, principal among which, as he said, is that "Iran does not want to justify the occupation and that the talks Washington wanted would sound as a justification for the occupation."

He added: "We do not want to give the impression that the Iranians sold Iraq out in exchange for solving Iran's crisis with the United States regarding its nuclear program."

The Iranian official, who spoke with Asharq Al-Awsat on the condition of anonymity, revealed that the United States had addressed several messages to Iran through US Ambassador to Iraq Zalmay Khalilzad to hold talks with it on the Iraqi affair. He explained that these messages were conveyed by Iraqi officials, especially President Jalal Talabani, and then through a letter addressed by Abdulaziz al-Hakim, leader of the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq. The official said that the US Administration set some preconditions for the dialogue, adding that "Iran realized that the dialogue would be useless."

The Iranian official did not deny the active Iranian role in Iraq. He said: "It is not only Iran that is pumping money into Iraq. Many countries, including the United States and other neighboring countries, are pumping funds into Iraq to influence the political situation there."

I think the U.S. is going to find out the hard way that democracy as we know it will never work in Iraq due to religious influence in the government.

Keeping with their word, the Minutemen Corps started building the immigration fence along a strip of Arizona farm land Saturday. Hundreds of volunteers showed up to help with the construction and to make a point to the U.S. Congress.

The Minuteman Civil Defense Corps plans to install a combination of barbed wire, razor wire, and in some spots, steel rail barriers along the 10-mile stretch of private land in southeastern Arizona.

They hope it prompts the federal government to do the same along the entire Arizona border.

Minuteman spokeswoman Connie Hair said it would take up to three weeks to build the estimated $100,000 fence. So far, the group has raised $380,000 for more border fences, she said.

Timothy Schwartz of Glendale, Ariz., who was among at least 200 volunteers gathered, said he wants to see a fence along the border from California to Texas.

"We're not going to stop," Schwartz said. "We're going to stay here with a group and keep building."

Most of us here in the states, know CNN has trouble translating English to English as one of his readers commented.

Does the CNN have problems with translation from Arabic to English or is it a case of deliberate twisting of facts?

Yesterday Iraq's and Iran's foreign ministers had a joint press conference in Baghdad after which the CNN ran a headline that reads "Iraqi minister defends Iranian nuclear program" and wrote:

Iran has a right to develop nuclear technology and the international community should drop its demands that Tehran prove it's not trying to build a nuclear weapon, Iraq's foreign minister said Friday.

"Iran doesn't claim that they want to obtain a nuclear weapon or a nuclear bomb, so there is no need that we ask them for any guarantee now," Hoshyar Zebari said after meeting with his Iranian counterpart, Manouchehr Mottaki.

I wasn't there at the press conference but I was able to find an audio clip of the same part of minister Zibari's statement through Radio Sawa, and what he said here is so much different from what the CNN claimed he did (my translation):

We respect Iran's and every other nation's right to pursue nuclear technology for research purposes and peaceful use given they accept [giving] the internationally required guarantees that this will not lead to an armament race in the region…

Listening to the 2nd version of the story (in Zibari's own voice) it is clear that Iraq recognizes Iran's right to use nuclear power for peaceful purposes exclusively and is moreover asking Iran for guarantees, not the other way around CNN!

Does CNN have a translation problem or is this a deliberate attempt to deceive it's readers and viewers?

The irony of it all, as some in the Arab world look to Israel and the U.S. for assistance with security in the middle east as Iran and Hamas gain a foothold in their own backyard.

Jordan, who has shown to be a good ally in the U.S. War on Terror, sees a very legitimate problem on the horizon as Israel plans to withdrawal from the West Bank area leaving yet another uncontrolled region for militants to take over and exploit.

Jordanian Parliament Speaker Abdel Hadi Majali warned that Iran is a threat to Jordanian security, regardless of whether US military strikes take place or not. Citing Iranian involvement in Iraq and their support for Hamas, Majali said, “Iran is threatening Jordan’s security and it is targeting the stability of the country and not ousting its regime. Iran poses a real threat on Jordan. Jordan will be harmed whether Iran was the target of a military operation or not.”

Jordan has long accused Hamas of using Jordanian territory and citizens for terrorist activities, including the capture of weapons stashes and Hamas arrests. Iran has openly supported Hamas, especially since their election victory and dominance in the PA, seeking increased influence in the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Today, Jordan is urging President Bush to reject Olmert’s planned Israeli withdrawal from the West Bank. Jordan fears that the vacuum created would inflame the region and create serious instability within the Hashemite Kingdom, largely comprised of their own Palestinian population. According to an unnamed Bush Administration official, “The bottom line from the Jordanians was: ‘We have enough of a problem with al-Qaeda and Hamas. This makes it worse?’”

I guess the moral of this story is:
Be careful what you wish for... it could come true.

Bomb attack on Blair morally justifiable

George Galloway has said the assassination of Tony Blair would be "morally justified" given his support for the war in Iraq.

The anti-war Respect MP said a suicide bomb attack on the Prime Minister would be "morally equivalent to ordering the deaths of thousands of innocent people in Iraq as Blair did".

The controversial left-winger added that he was not calling for such an attack and that he would tip off the authorities if he knew of one.

But his remarks provoked a furious response, with Labour MP Stephen Pound calling him "disgraceful" and "twisted".

In an interview with GQ magazine, Mr Galloway was asked whether the assassination of Mr Blair by a suicide bomber would be justified, if there were no other casualties.

He replied: "Yes, it would be morally justified. I am not calling for it, but if it happened I believe it would be of a wholly different moral order to the events of 7/7.

"It would be entirely logical and explicable. And morally equivalent to ordering the deaths of thousands of innocent people in Iraq as Blair did."

This immigration debate currently going on in the Senate is looking more like a three ring circus than anything else.

An extraordinary exchange just took place on the Senate floor over the last 40 minutes. It's the most important debate of the year, in my opinion.

The questions are these: Who do we let into this country and how many?

On one side of the debate: Democrat Sen. Jeff Bingaman of N.M. and Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama.

On the other side, the blubbering open-borders duo of GOP Sen. John McCain of Arizona and Democrat Sen. Teddy Kennedy of Massachusetts.

Bingaman is offering an amendment to cap the number of visas for legal permanent residents at 650,000. The current Senate immigration bill essentially obliterates the current employer-based green card cap of 140,000. Spouses and children currently count against that cap. Under the Senate bill, that would no longer be true. There would be, in effect, no limits. Bingaman's cap would be four times the current rate--yet both McCain and Kennedy are responding hysterically as if Bingaman has proposed some human rights crackdown on the world.

A new audio tape released on an Islamic web site claims Osama bin Laden rejects Zacarias Moussaoui's claim of being the 20th hijacker in the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon building.

Osama bin Laden said Zacarias Moussaoui, the only person convicted in a U.S. court for the September 11 attacks, had nothing to do with the operations, according to a Web site audiotape released on Tuesday.

Bin Laden said he had personally assigned tasks to the 19 hijackers who staged the attacks on U.S. cities which killed about 3,000 people.

"The truth is that he has no connection whatsoever with the events of September 11. I am certain of what I say because I was responsible for entrusting the 19 brothers ... with the raids," said the speaker who sounded like the leader of Al Qaeda.

The authenticity of this tape has yet to be verified. It was posted on a Web site often used by Al Qaeda.

The Israeli army has finally captured one of it's most wanted terrorist since 1998. The top Hamas commander was snagged in an apartment in the occupied West Bank.

Ibrahim Hamed has been accused of masterminding dozens of suicide bombings on Israel over a five year period which killed over 60 people.

A top Hamas fugitive blamed for attacks that killed dozens of Israelis and five Americans surrendered to Israeli troops Tuesday after they ringed his West Bank hideout and threatened to demolish it with him inside.

Army Col. Amir Abulafiyeh, who oversaw the capture, described Hamed as "creative and cruel" in plotting attacks on a Jerusalem university, where the Americans were killed; an Israeli fuel depot; Israel's rail system; and a pool hall.

Troops acting on a tip surrounded Hamed's hideout in a two-story building in a well-to-do district of Ramallah, just 200 yards from Abbas' residence. A dozen jeeps and two armored personnel carriers surrounded the cement-block building, which had a yellow awning, and soldiers called on Hamed over loudspeakers to surrender.

Witnesses said an army bulldozer rammed against the green metal shutters of a ground-floor shop when Hamed did not come out. Thirty minutes later, he emerged wearing a light-colored shirt and gray pants.

Following instructions over the loudspeaker, he took off his clothes and walked toward the soldiers in his underwear. Palestinian militants surrendering to troops are routinely asked to strip to make sure they are not carrying explosives.

On Sunday, a newly released court document revealed that Rep. William Jefferson who has been under an FBI investigation for bribery, was videotaped accepting $100,000 from an FBI informant in an alleged scam on a Virginia businesswoman.
The FBI also found a large amount of money in Jefferson's freezer wrapped in tin foil.

Allegedly scamming a Virginia businesswoman could prove to be a major mistake for a Democratic congressman from New Orleans.

The FBI revealed Sunday that Rep. William Jefferson (news, bio, voting record), under investigation for bribery, was videotaped accepting $100,000 in $100 bills from an FBI informant whose conversations with the lawmaker also were recorded. Agents later found the cash hidden in his freezer, according to a court document released Sunday.

At one meeting captured on audiotape, Jefferson chuckles about writing in code to keep secret what the government contends was his corrupt role in getting his children a cut of a communications company's deal for work in Africa.

As Jefferson and the informant passed notes about what percentage the lawmaker's family might receive, the congressman "began laughing and said, 'All these damn notes we're writing to each other as if we're talking, as if the FBI is watching,'" he told the businesswoman, who was wearing an FBI recording device.

Two Saudi men were arrested Friday in Tampa, Florida after they successfully boarded a school bus and rode it all the way to the Wharton High School.

Once on the bus, the two men laughed and spoke in Arabic while the students around them became increasingly uneasy, as did the bus driver who called in to the school. Authorities were waiting for them as they arrived at school.

The humanitarian crisis in the region is getting worse by the day as the Hamas government continues to fail in it's attempt to get money to run it's government.

Yesterday Palestinian intelligence chief Tareq Abu Rajab had to be rushed to Israel for treatment to wounds sustained in an explosion in an elevator at his Gaza Strip headquarters. Hamas is suspected in an attempt to murder him.

Israel to Give Medicines to Palestinians

The Israeli Cabinet approved Sunday the transfer of $11 million worth of medicine and health supplies to the Palestinians to help ease the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Israeli officials said recently that they did not want to cause a health crisis in the Palestinian areas, and would find a way to transfer the money for humanitarian use while bypassing Hamas.

The Cabinet decided Sunday to use $11 million of the funds owed the Palestinians to buy medicines and health supplies that will be transferred directly to Palestinian hospitals.

"We have no intention of helping the Palestinian government," Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said before Sunday's Cabinet meeting. "We will not transfer one cent to any Palestinian official but ... we will transfer above and beyond what is necessary for humanitarian needs."

Palestinian's are getting more help from their enemy then their own government.

It's becoming painfully obvious to all that the Palestinian people voted in a terrorist organization that is not going to change it's ways and act as a valid government, but will instead continue using it's terrorist tactics of murder and violence in order to achieve it's goals.

On Sunday a second assassination attempt was made on yet another Palestinian official, senior Gaza commander Rashid Abu Shbak. Security forces found a roadside bomb just outside his home, moments before his motorcade was to leave.

Gaza Strip - Palestinian officials said they foiled an assassination attempt Sunday against a top security chief loyal to President Mahmoud Abbas, discovering a large roadside bomb planted shortly before the commander's motorcade was to pass through the area.

The discovery of the 154-pound device was likely to further inflame tensions between Abbas and the rival Hamas-led government. On Saturday, Abbas' intelligence chief in Gaza was seriously wounded in an explosion.

Abu Shbak is at the center of a power struggle that has escalated since Hamas defeated Abbas' Fatah movement in January legislative elections. Abbas, a political moderate, was elected in separate presidential elections last year and wields significant authority, including formal control over some of the security forces.

The dispute has focused in large part on control of the security forces. In April, Abbas angered Hamas by placing Abu Shbak in charge of three security agencies that report to the Hamas-controlled Interior Ministry. Hamas responded by announcing formation of its own security force.

It does not look very good for the peace process in the middle east in the near future. A Palestinian civil war appears inevitable.

As the "Civil War Alert" continues, some Palestinian security officials suspect Hamas may have been behind a bomb blast that seriously injured Tareq Abu Rajab, the Palestinian intelligence chief. Rajab is a top official in Abbas' Fatah movement and a key ally of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

A bodyguard was killed and nine other people were wounded in the explosion in an elevator shaft of the heavily guarded compound. There was no claim of responsibility.

The attack came at a time of growing friction between Abbas and the Hamas-led government over control of Palestinian security forces. Recent clashes between rival groups of gunmen have deepened tensions.

Abu Rajab and six aides and bodyguards got into an elevator and were close to the second floor when the bomb exploded before noon at the intelligence headquarters in northern Gaza City. One of the bodyguards was killed, and Abu Rajan and five others in the elevators were seriously wounded. Three others were also hurt, including a secretary riding in an adjacent elevator, doctors said.

Earlier this week factions loyal to President Mahmoud Abbas and Hamas security forces mounted a show of force in Gaza City in an attempt to get control of it and maintain some assemblance of order.

As the PA government's financial situation continues to erode, a civil war of factions appears to be creeping closer to reality.

Amid fears that the tensions could spread beyond Gaza, which borders Egypt, Hamas and Fatah officials attended three-way talks in Gaza with an Egyptian intelligence official but the session ended with no concrete agreement.

The Senate endorsed a chance at citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants Wednesday but also voted to build 370 miles of triple-layered fencing along the Mexican border in increasingly emotional debate over election-year immigration legislation.

Taken together, the votes gave fresh momentum to legislation that closely follows President Bush's call for a major overhaul of the nation's troubled immigration system.

The vote was 66-33 against a proposal that would have removed provisions giving an eventual chance at citizenship to illegal immigrants who have been in the country more than two years.

A few minutes earlier, the Senate had voted 83-16 in favor of construction of the fence and 500 miles of vehicle barriers, the first significant victory in two days for conservatives seeking to place their stamp on the measure.

European nations have weighed adding a light-water reactor to a package of incentives meant to persuade Tehran to permanently give up uranium enrichment — or face the threat of U.N. Security Council sanctions.

U.S. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack declined to say Tuesday whether a light-water reactor would be offered in the package. But he insisted that Iran would be required to halt its program of enriching and reprocessing uranium on Iranian soil, saying the United States and others "do not want the Iranian regime to have the ability to master those critical pathways to a nuclear weapon."

Let's face it, The illegal immigration problem in the United States is not because of our porous borders or a lack of security, it is caused by the Mexican government's failure to create jobs. Included in their economic system is a simple scam developed by the government elite and corrupt government officials that causes this massive flight of millions of immigrants north to the US, just to survive. It's understandable the Mexican government would be concerned about the US stopping this immigration fiasco, because the fewer immigrants living in the U.S. and sending American money back to their families, the bigger the dent it puts in their economy. The Mexican economy depends deeply on this money being sent back home. It's part of the plan scam.

It has been estimated at over $14 BILLION annually.
This is $14 BILLION leaving our economy every year. Not a small figure to say the least.

President Vicente Fox said in September, 2003, "Money sent from Mexican workers in the United States to their families back home has reached a record $12 billion in 2003."

Remittances "are our biggest source of foreign income, bigger than oil, tourism or foreign investment," Fox told reporters after a meeting with Mexican-American businessmen.

"The 20 million Mexicans in the United States generate a gross product that is slightly higher than the $600 billion generated by Mexicans in Mexico," Fox said, adding that his country has the ninth-largest economy in the world.

"If we could add up the two products, Mexico would be the third or fourth economy in the world," he said.

Fox said the money transfers grew after Mexican consulates started giving identity cards to their citizens in the United States.

"The cards are working. All doubts have been cleared up," Fox said. "Almost 2.5 million people have them, and we want all Mexicans to have them."

The cards, known as "matricula consular," allow holders to get driver's licenses in some states, open bank accounts and send money home. Police have found them useful when arresting some illegal immigrants.

But critics have raised concerns over whether the cards provide legitimacy to illegal immigrants.

The President drew fresh criticism from his GOP base Tuesday for endorsing eventual citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants. In his speech to the nation last night he appeared to be favoring both sides of the coin at the same time.

President Bush stepped to the right and left at the same time on immigration: courting conservatives with tough talk of sending the National Guard to the border and seeking to reassure moderates that a guest-worker program will be part of the mix.

"These are not contradictory goals," he declared in a prime-time address to the nation. Neither side seemed reassured.

Bush's Monday night speech from the Oval Office was an attempt to prod lawmakers and break a long-running political impasse, one that has social conservatives at odds with their business-community brethren as an election to determine the makeup of Congress approaches.

As Bush continues playing this immigration policy juggling act, he may be starting to realize the conservative movement in this country is becoming very frustrated with his unwavering stance on this issue.
